Leaking dams are a common source of frustration for those who make their living on the land.
Whether for irrigation, stock watering or emergency uses such as fire-fighting, a reliable water supply is at the heart of any successful agricultural enterprise.
Despite earthmover’s best efforts, new dams can seal imperfectly, while older dams deteriorate over time for a number of reasons.
Dam repair has traditionally involved draining away precious water and bringing in heavy equipment to carry out repairs.
This approach can cost many thousands of dollars, takes significant expertise and wastes valuable time.
There is, however, a much simpler and cheaper alternative.
A specialised range of super absorbent polymers (SAPs), manufactured by Polymer Innovations, provides a fool-proof DIY solution.
A polymer solution typically costs several hundreds of dollars – not thousands.
After extensive field and laboratory testing WaterSave Plug was released in 2000.
Further refinements saw WaterSave Seep introduced to seal leaks in finer, more porous soils.
“Plug and Seep have the same application method,” Managing director, Polymer Innovation, Andrew Evans said.
“In both instances the polymer, in the form of a white powder, is applied to the water surface.
“That means there is no need to drain the dam or use heavy earthmoving equipment.
“The products are easy to apply and don’t require specialised equipment or skills.
“They are safe, non-toxic, and are able to target specific areas rather than treating the entire water surface.
“For a typical repair, the polymers are applied at a rate of 100gm per square meter.”
Once the treatment area is identified, the polymer is applied by hand to the water surface.
The polymer particles descend and begin to hydrate and expand almost immediately.
“Results can often be seen in two to three days,” Mr Evans said.
“In some cases the full effect takes up to three weeks.
“With particularly aggressive leaks, a second application may be required.”
WaterSave Plug and Seep are bio-degradable and will breakdown over a number of years.
Over time, the build-up of silt on top of the polymer will form a permanent seal.
WaterSave Plug and Seep can be purchased in 10kg, 15kg and 19kg pails, while large custom orders in excess of 500kg can be supplied in a bulk bag.
