Wal and George Merriman, Merryville stud, Boorowa had a very big day taking many of the ribbons in the finewool section judged by David Watson, Maisters Swamp, Kentucky.

With his daughter, Sophie, adjudicating in the superfine wool classes, it was thought this was the first time a father and daughter combination had judged Merino classes at the Canberra Royal.

Success came early for the Merriman brothers when their young ewe in the March-shorn two-tooth finewool class was judged junior champion ewe of the show before going on to be paraded as the champion finewool ewe and a member of the Koonwarra Trophy-winning group of five.

Mr Watson said the ewe caught his eye immediately he started working his way through the class.

“She has a lot of style and size while still being feminine and a great wool producer,” he said.

“She has a wonderful barrel and with a lovely type of wool.”

Champion March-shorn finewool ram was awarded to a six-tooth exhibited by the Merryville stud, Boorowa.

Mr Watson said the ram was an exceptionally well-grown sheep but it was the style and evenness of his fleece which was really attractive.

The ram went on to be supreme finewool exhibit and led the Koonwarra Trophy-winning team.

Reserve champion March-shorn ram was also shown by the Merryville stud.

Poll Merino section

Wal and George Merriman, Merryville stud, Boorowa, showed the champion March-shorn Poll Merino ram while Pete Lette, Conrayn, Berridale took home the sash for reserve champion March-shorn Poll Merino ram.

John and Greg Alcock, Greenland, Bungarby exhibited the champion March-shorn Poll Merino ewe getting the nod ahead of the reserve champion March-shorn Poll Merino ewe shown by Winston and Sue McDonald, Royalla, Wallendbeen.
