One of the most frequent questions that I’m asked is how to find information on poultry, especially where to get birds.
One place to begin is The Land as the classifieds often contain places to obtain birds, clubs and information about shows.
There is also the Australian published Australasian Poultry which is excellent.
Your local paper will also have plenty of information on when the local Agricultural Show is on and this is the place to go if you want to meet local breeders and look at different breeds.
This is probably the best opportunity you will get to see birds and have them explained by the breeders.
Try and get there just after judging finishes or a little before so you can watch the judge at work.
Most judges will be happy to talk to you after they have finished their work.
They are very experienced poultry people and will be able to explain complex ‘chook-speak’ very simply.
They will also be able to explain the differences in judging for your breed.
The steward is usually an experienced poultry person and will also be able to help with any simple requests.
At the show you will also be able to get information on the local poultry club or a specialist breed club.
I recommend you join the local club as it will enable you to go to meetings and then get very detailed information on breeds and local conditions.
This is also the best place to get birds for your own flock or at least details of breeders specialising in the breed you desire.
Clubs often get together and vaccinate birds or organise trips to larger shows like the Sydney Royal and these are often fun and educational.
One final source of information is this column and you can always write in and ask a question.
The show poultry scene is a very friendly one and you should have no trouble at all getting the help you need.
