A renowned professor from Texas A and M University will be providing some hot tips to beef producers on how to increase productivity and profitability when he kicks off the ABS Better Beef Seminar and Client Progeny Days in Albury next week.
Running from March 19 to 21, the three day program offers a range of opportunities for beef producers to learn new skills and information, look through some progeny groups of cattle, get hands on experience with new technologies and really nut down into discussions with panelists.
Professor and head of animal science Dr Cliff Lamb, Texas, will be returning for his third time in five years to be a lead speaker of the seminar and workshop to throw some light on the best effective fixed time artificial insemination programs, the magic of minerals and critical vaccination times.
ABS Australia beef product manager Bill Cornell, Victoria, said Dr Lamb provides a great wealth of information and experience that cattleman really get so much from which is why they keep asking us to bring him back.
“He will be speaking on Sexcel, the new sexed semen product, and what is in the pipeline for the future and where we will be in the next five to ten years, whilst bringing it back to an economic perspective,” he said.
“We aim to show people how you can make more money from cattle, just from being better reproductively. Fertility is the biggest gain producers can make in cattle and there is profit in a cow calving every year at the same time.
“Dr Lamb will be available on March 21 at the workshops for producers to ask more questions or catch up with him if they missed the seminar.”
Other speakers include; Mark Lucas of Reiland Angus and Pasture Agronomy Service who will discuss knowing the grazing environment and plant and animal genetic selection, general manager of ABS Australia, James Smallwood, who will provide a summary of ABS Sexcel sexed genetics and new ABS technologies, and Lachlan Ayoub from Zoetis will discuss ‘Heifer Select’ and commercial genomics testing now available through Angus Austrlaia.
Fletch Kelly from the ABS Australia beef team will introduce new technologies including a ABS HCP app that is set to excite and revolutionise the future of joining programs, while Mr Cornell will talk about focusing on bulls.
Participants will also have the opportunity to attend the client progeny day on March 20 hosted by Dunoon Angus, Holbrook, and Ardrossan Angus, “Talmalmo Station”.
Mr Cornell said producers will be able to look through a range of different aged females and bulls that will be on display at each location.
“Animals will be penned according to sire progeny groups which will allow people to get a quick snapshot and assess how different sires are breeding,” he said.
Sapien Technology will have their KoolCollect system on working display at Ardrossan where they will be running demonstrations for people to see the technology working first hands and to ask questions.
ABS Australia will be hosting a producer dinner at the Albury Commercial Club where there will be a small auction raising money for the beyondblue charity. Included in the auction will be semen from Ardrossan Equator A241.
