A substantial life’s work of Jeff and Kerrie Etheridge was dispersed to the far ends of the continent on Saturday, with nearly 200 Limousin females, 91 progeny and five bulls selling to a top price of $18,000 – twice.
Buyers from Alice Springs to Bega were among those who placed bids in the selling ring at Yarrowitch via Walcha.
Three way pregnant cow and calf units, 77 in total, averaged $5539.
Cows with calves, 15 in total, averaged $4366.
Both categories set sale records with two and a half-year old black poll Red Rock Black Lynx from Red Rock Kylie by Red Rock Jaguar, with calf by Flemington Joker, sold to Ian and Donna Robson, Flemington Limousins, Batlow.
Michael and Toni Dwan, Elwan Vale Limousins Allora, Queensland, won the bid on second top-priced Red Rock Fancy Free by Red Rock Zucchero, an apricot poll that previously won grand champion Limousin cow in Sydney and was runner up in the interbreed. Her bull calf by Mandayen Mr Jock was a price maker in himself.
The fact that she presented lame, although fully guaranteed, didn’t dampen the bids. Elwan Vale will use her as a donor cow.
Cows in calf, 31 individuals, averaged $4419 topping at $8500.
Heifers in calf, 18 all up, averaged $4194 topping at $8000.
Yearling heifers, 24 in total, averaged $2833 and reached $5000.
Five bulls averaged $8600 and topped at a Red Rock record of $12,500 for the homozygous black and homozygous polled Red Rock Double Sprung, going to volume buyers Luke and Sherrie Whitty, Mount Pleasant Limousins, Forbes.
The couple’s three sons, with their own Limousin studs, were among the buyers and the family came away with 13 cows with calves along with the bull.
Alan and Carol Luscombe, Ivory Vale Limousins Gloucester were equal volume volume buyers and also bought the bull Red Rock Black Fox for $7000. The couple will use their 13 new females to improve the stud’s bloodlines.
The black poll Batlow bull Flemington Joker, by Wulfs Spring Loaded, which has done so much for the Red Rock stud since he was bought as a champion rising two year old at Wodonga in 2015, sold for $8500 to Oakvale Limousins, Tamworth.
Flemington Kracker sold for $8000 and Mandayen Mr Jock went for $7000.
Apricot poll cow Red Rock Forever Hot, by Stevens Prophet, with calf by Flemington Joker and back in calf to Mandayan Mr Jock sold for $15,000 to John and Karol Wilkes, Leon Limousins, Pittsworth Queensland.
Steve Maginnity and Mason Roy, at Newrybar via Lennox Head, paid $9000 for the black poll Red Rock Black Vixen by Wulfs Spring Loaded with a heifer calf by Mandayan Mr Jock and rejoined to the same. They bought black poll Red Rock Black Donna, also by Spring Loaded, for $8500. The pair are forming a new Limousin partnership.
Grant Sheddon, Ainskirbeau Limousins, Greenridge via Casino, paid $6500 for black poll Red Rock Fancy by Red Rock Tiger with heifer calf at foot by Flemington Joker and rejoined to Flemington Kracker
Frog Hollow Limousins, Black Mountain, bought the black poll Red Rock Kylie by Red Rock Tiger for $9000, with bull calf by Flemington Joker and rejoined to the same.
