“It doesn’t grow in the silo,” says Gerogery cropper Daniel Moll.
Like most Riverina farmers, Mr Moll has dry-sown winter crops in anticipation of an autumn break.
With about 200 hectares of dual purpose oats, triticale, wheat and grazing canola planted, Mr Moll hoped to see a wet weekend to kick the season off.
The sudden drop in temperature which swept through the region on Saturday brought more high wind but not much rain.
About 8mm of rain has been recorded in Albury across the weekend, but it was much lighter in other areas.
Areas to the west of Albury saw falls of less than 5mm.
The official recording at Deniliquin registered just 1.8mm to 9am Sunday.
Burrumbuttock mixed farmer Greg Tallent said 8mm fell on his property.
At this time of the year Mr Tallent said most hoped to have a good drenching by Anzac Day to kick the crops along but this season shaped a slower start.
The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts rain to clear in coming days but predicted up to 5mm on Friday.
“There’s not much rain on the forecast but we have to get sowing and try to get it in the ground and utilise the warm ground moisture if we get rain,” he said.
