At the Lucas family’s Reiland Angus bull sale held on property “Killimicat”, Tumut last Wednesday bulls were auctioned to a top of $26,000.
With 46 years of breeding behind them the Lucas family’s Reiland Angus continue to produce a uniform article that performs for clientele.
Strong repeat support saw 51 of the 61 bulls offered sold for an respectable average of $8480.
Purchasing the top price bull, Reiland MacCauley M1026 by Reiland Hilary H874, was John Fleming, Gobba Angus, Lake Albert, NSW.
The August 2016 drop, Reiland MacCauley M1026 had estimated breeding values (EBVs) in the top 2 per cent of the breed for EMA at +9.
Gobba Angus stud manager Jason Hulm said the stud was a return buyer, having been established three years ago after buying elite females from Reiland Angus.
“His EMA and IMF was outstanding, his 600 day weight at +123 makes him a very attractive bull,” Mr Hulm said.
“We aim to get as much muscle and marbling back into our herd as possible as our clients are targeting the feeder steer market. He had all the ticks we were looking for and the only bull in the catalogue we were really after.”
Return buyer the Houston family, Houston Pastoral Company, “Burrowye Station”, Wodonga showed strong support for the Reiland bulls, purchasing 13 in total to a top of $18,000 and an impressive average of $11,269.
“We have been purchasing Reiland Angus cattle since 1990 and know the cattle and know what to expect,” Graham Houston said.
“The bulls purchased today all have outstanding growth and birth figures. Our cattle are wanted in the marketplace due to the feedlot performance we get from the Reiland genetics while maintaining fertility traits for the cowherd at home.”
Other volume buyers included Kalkite Pastoral Co, “Woodford”, Narrawa NSW who purchased five bulls for an average of $5000 and Ballandry Pastoral, Strath Creek, Victoria who averaged $6750 for their four.
Among the volume buyers, Audrey Ratcliffe, Woodlands, Urana, NSW purchased Reiland Macquire M519 for $9500, with part proceeds of his sale were donated to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
Reiland principal Mark Lucas felt it was a positive sale, from the top, right through was very strong.
“It was a testimony to the presentation of the bulls and the data set that accompany them,” Mr Lucas said. “I was very humbled by the average.
“Fortunately we are at the stage now where we are breeding bulls that reflect what the data set suggests.”
The sale was conducted by Elders Rural Services Tumut, with Michael Glasser, Glasser Total Sales Management as auctioneer.
