Values are less than last year, and weights are lower but vendors are prepared to set a reasonable reserve on their weaners offered during the sale at Cooma.
With 2700 mostly black cattle on offer, agents were anticipating a difficult sale, so were very pleased to effect a total clearance, with buyers meeting the reserve on those few pens passed in.
Landmark, Cooma manager Myles Buchanan said there was limited buyer competition due to the dry season, so it was encouraging they were able to absorb all cattle on offer.
“There was no doubt some vendors are disappointed compared with prices gained last year,” he said.
“But they have to take into account the dry season across the south where producers are now feeding a lot of stock.”
Mr Buchanan noted the cattle were in good order given the dry conditions, with breeding quality showing through.
Garry Ingram, "Karinya", Delegate, sold 16 Angus steers, Rennylea and Hazeldean-blood, for $840 which was $435 under similar steers sold last year.
“I am a bit disappointed with the sale, but I have little choice, with cows starting to calf and going into the winter,” Mr Ingram said.
“The sale is about $150 down on three weeks ago.”
