Family succession planning has resulted in the rare offering of one of the better known cattle stations in the tightly held Alice Springs region of Central Australia.
Yambah Station, held since the 1940s by three generations of the Gorey family, has been listed for sale by Antony Glynn of Central Australian Rural Property.
Owners Aaron and Karina Gorey have other country in Queensland, and Yambah Station is being offloaded as part of an asset restructuring process.
The offering of such a landmark property has sparked widespread interest in the Northern Territory, and is expected to attract offers from other states as well as overseas.
Situated 60 kilometres north of Alice Springs with a double frontage to the Stuart Highway and abutting the Strangways Range, Kambah Station comprises 2310 square kilometres, or 231,000 hectares.
It is being offered for sale on a walk-in, walk-out basis with its respected herd of Grove blood Shorthorn cattle and an extensive inventory of plant and equipment.
The country is described as typical rangeland grazing, open to lightly timbered, with good ground cover of native grasses, herbage and introduced buffel.
Average rainfall is about 300mm and the property is exceptionally well watered by 23 equipped bores and 21 dams and waterholes.
According to selling agent Antony Glynn, the season in the Centre is currently dry, as elsewhere, but the property’s long history of conservative stocking means the country remains in good heart.
One of the drawcards of the offering is the opportunity to acquire its top-rated herd of Shorthorn cattle, comprising 3751 joined females, 967 branded calves and 137 bulls (including 20 Wagyus).
Steers bred on Yambah Station have regularly taken championship honours in annual carcase competitions at the Alice Springs Show.
Working infrastructure is appropriate to the scale of the operation and includes 17 sets of steel cattle yards (all with drafting and loading facilities), machinery and vehicle sheds, workshop and quarters.
The six-bedroom station homestead is of rendered brick construction, set within fenced lawns, and features two large living or entertaining areas and ducted air conditioning.
It is complemented by a three-bedroom, air-conditioned cottage of decorative block construction and a meathouse and coolroom.
Station plant included in the sale ranges from earthmoving machinery and loaders to trucks, trailers, stock crates, 4WD vehicles and motor bikes.
Expressions of interest for Yambah Station will close with the selling agent on June 30.
