I never really liked cats, preferring dogs for their unwavering and devout loyalty. It’s often said that a canine can almost replace a human on a farm.
So it came as a bit of a shock when I realised I had morphed into a feline fancier.
My cat collection began rather innocently with an old feral cat that had set up home in the dairy bales and lived among the calves, sipping on milk from the calf feeders and fulfilling its protein needs with juicy river rats who were in turn dining on spilt grain from the silo.
It wasn’t until the old cat died that I realised how effective it was at pest management. After discovering a burgeoning rat population and rat nest under my car bonnet, I needed to reconsider my affinity with cats and replenish the stock with two young kittens.
Within the blink of an eye the cat population had flourished and before I knew it I’d become that crazy cat lady.
Thankfully the rats have moved on.
