SEEDSTOCK producer Steve Peake has been judging cattle for many years, but this year will be his first time judging at the Shorthorn breed’s top event.
Mr Peake, principal of Bowen Poll Herefords and Peakes Angus at Barraba, has judged at the Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth royal shows in the past, as well as the Charolais national and the Hereford national at Wodonga.
He said he was looking forward to the event, particularly as the breed celebrates its biggest achievement of the past few years, the Thousand Guineas brand, which has created a new premium market for producers.
“You’ve got to take your hat off to the Shorthorn breed,” Mr Peake said.
“They’ve been able to really improve the breed in the last decade.
“I’ll be looking for structurally sound cattle that are easy fleshing, with good carcase merit, softness, and type. I think with big numbers in these classes, there’s more chance to show the type that’s going to take the breed forward.”
