The National Shorthorn Sale at Dubbo topped at $40,000 for the last lot in the catalogue when South Australian and New Zealand interests combined to grab a 22-month-old roan bull offered by the Job family, Royalla stud, Yeoval.
Neilson, Sue and Nic Job were expecting Royalla Tremain M260, a son of Futurity Fully Loaded Dynamite F109, would sell for good money but not $40,000.
Tremain was bought by Andy Withers, Belmore stud, Naracoorte, SA, while his long-time friends, Ken and Betty Morton, Morton Shorthorns, Katikati, NZ, bought the NZ semen rights.
Mr Withers wasn’t expecting to have to cough up $40,000 to get the bull but he wasn’t disappointed.
He said the bull had “incredible” structural soundness and muscle pattern and a “beautiful” temperament and fat cover.
Mr Withers runs about 500 Shorthorn stud females in his family’s Belmore stud.
The Mortons weren’t surprised by the price, predicting before the sale that he would make the top money.
They have made the trip to the National Shorthorn Show and Sale at Dubbo numerous times.
Mr Morton said 868kg Royalla Tremain was the complete package, had strong figures and a great temperament.
Nic Job said he had fielded plenty of inquiries about Tremain before the sale but wasn’t expecting such a high price.
Tremain, who was out of Royalla Rosebud H167, had the previous day won the division three championship at the National Shorthorn Show.
He had rump and rib fat measurements of 19mm and 13mm and an eye muscle area of 120 square centimetres.
The sale attracted a solid group of commercial breeders looking for top genetics at a bargain price, given the tough seasonal conditions.
Second top price of $16,000 was paid by Bob Rollinson, “Goolgumbla”, Jerilderie, for Bayview Associate M62 offered by the Thompson family, Bayview stud, Yorke Peninsula, SA.
The 23-month-old bull was by Sprys Annies Legend F98 out of Bayview Flossie B6, weighed 1050kg and had an EMA of 135cm.
Volume buyers included Merriwee Pastoral Company, “Merriwee”, Condobolin which picked up 11 bulls to a top of $5000. The rest went for $4000.
PR Gould and Co, Lucindale, SA, snapped up seven bulls, paying a top of $12,000 three times.
Firstly they paid $12,000 to get Leeds Franklin M25, a 1030kg son of Futurity Junk Yard Dog J82 offered by Leeds Shorthorns, “Broome”, Jerilderie.
They paid the same money to score the grand champion of the National Shorthorn Show this year, Nagol Park XLT M104, offered by Roger and Niaomi Evans, Tamworth.
Nagol Park XLT M104 was this year’s Shorthorn supreme exhibit at the Sydney Royal.
And late in the sale they had to bid $12,000 to secure Polldale Manager M38, a roan son of Yamburgan Sparta H369, offered by the Willliams family, Polldale stud, Dubbo.
Nicholls Bros, “Wandeeen”, Gundagai, went home with four bulls, topping at $7000 twice.
Bulls went Victoria, SA, WA and all parts of NSW.
The sale grossed $634,000 for the 94 bulls sold at auction. The selling agents were Elders and Landmark with Paul Dooley, Tamworth, and Joel Fleming, Landmark Tamworth, taking the bids.

Unique was sold at $30,000 to Peter Falls, Malton Shorthorns, Finley, and Spencer Family, Spencer Family Shorthorns, Yuroke, Vic.

Andy Withers said.. “He’s got the right maturity pattern and he’s incredibly structurally sound to go with our herd.
“Many years ago we bought The Grove Kookaburra for the same reason and I’ve sold his semen all over the world. and there’s about a quarter of the bulls in this catalogue that got him in their background.
“And I regard that R Tremain is the biggest purchase since then.
“I think he’s got the attributes we need . He’s medium maturity, He’s incredibly structurally sound. with good fleshing and fat cover.”
Ken Morton (who bought the NZ semen rights) said he bought a Marellan bull from the Job family in 1982 and another two years ago, and now this one.
“And we have had bulls many years ago from Andy Withers, so we have dealt with all these people for many years.
“ We’ve been to Dubbo 20 times at least.”

“He really won it over the Division 3 bull (Royalla Tremain) with that extra rib of length.
