Looking for a repeat Angus success at Tamworth sale

With ongoing tough seasonal conditions across much of the state and high-quality Angus genetics on offer, many buyers will attend ready to pounce on any bargains in the catalogue of 52 bulls and 11 females.

Secretary of the NEAB sale group, Brian Powell, Yamba Angus, Orange, said 10 studs would offer drafts of bulls and females at the sale and all were keen to score the top price and best average.

“They bring their best. It’s a competition. They all want to get the top price and the top average,” he said.

He said the number of repeat buyers was an ongoing feature of the sale and he didn’t expect things would be different this year. 

“Repeat buyers come here (to Tamworth) for the value.”

Mr Powell will have a draft of 11 bulls at the sale. He relocated his stud from a property on the Murrumbidgee river near Narrandera to Orange 12 months ago to escape regular flooding but has spent the past nine months feeding stock.   

Fellow Orange breeder, Dean Fredericksen, Dalwhinnie Angus, will offer eight bulls.

Mr Fredericksen, president of the NEAB group, said a lot of good bulls would be on offer from a variety of genetics lines.

He said the sale had a reputation for offering good value for top bulls. He said the sale provided smaller studs, particularly ones operated by emerging studmasters, with a good venue to sell.

Barry McFarlane, Bronmar Angus, Quirindi, has been selling at the NEAB sale for many years and this year will offer six bulls.

His son-in-law, Ewan McLeish, Outwest Angus, Coonamble, will judge the best animal in the yards and the one he chooses will have the opportunity of being sold first.

This year the New England Angus Breeders are offering a prize to the buyer who spends the most money at the sale.

The prize is five days in Vanuatu or Fiji,  whichever the winner chooses, including accommodation and airfares for two people.

Stud breeders participating in this year’s New England Angus Breeders sale will be walking in the footsteps of some of the breed’s greatest studmasters.

The first New England Angus Breeders sale was held in 1956 with some of the greats of the breed on the inaugural committee including Gordon Munro, Bruce Steel and chairman, Lin Sanderson.

Mary Reid from Narrangullen stud, Yass, was the first judge at the show and sale and Bruce Steel’s Ben Nevis stud, Walcha, bought the champion bull. 

The late Richard White, Bald Blair, Guyra, was the first patron.  

The event helped many new studs get established in the industry and they subsequently made  a big mark on the growth of the Angus breed.

This year’s sales offering for Tamworth.

Dean Fredericksen and family, Dalwhinnie Angus, near Orange, will offer eight bulls, up from the three to five they normally bring to Tamworth.

In their draft will be a couple of Millah Murrah Klooney sons and one Te Mania Emperor son.

Dalwhinnie Angus has been a strong supporter of the NEAB sale for the past eight years.

Eliza Borchardt (nee Newcombe), Oakvale stud, Tara, Queensland, will head south with one bull and one female.   

Eliza and father, Trevor (Narrawolga Angus, Duri) have been long-time vendors of the NEAB group sales. Eliza has shifted her Oakvale stud north of the border into Qld. 

The newest member and first-time vendors is LJH Angus.

Logan, Joshua and Hayden Evans from Tamworth will offer one bull for sale.

These young fellows have diverged from their mum and dad, Niaomi and Roger Evans’ passion for Shorthorns in their Nagol Park stud.

XL Beef will offer five stud females. Geoff and Nathan Steinbeck, Dungowan, have been regular vendors at the NEAB sale and will offer a cow and calf unit, one PTIC female and three yearlings ready to join this spring. 

These are high indexing daughters from some well known AI sires.  

The Steinbecks topped last year’s sale with two sons of Te Mania E343 both making $12,000. 

Last year was the first NEAB sale for Jarowa Angus from Hobby's Yards near Blayney.

Jake Walkom is a relatively new bull breeder who has a small number of stud females based on Te Mania bloodlines. He will offer six bulls for sale from sires, HPCA Intensity, GAR Prophet, Te Mania Emperor and Karoo F12 Coonamble H317.

Barry McFarlane, Bronmar stud, Qurindi, has been a long-time seller at NEAB. He named his stud after his two daughters, Bronwyn and Margaret. 

He will offer six bulls sired by SAV Thunderbird and a Poss Total Impact son from Outwest Angus at Coonamble.

Brian Powell, Yamba Angus, Orange will offer 11 bulls. Sires include Tuwharetoa Reagent and Te Mania Emperor.

He recently relocated the stud from Narrandera to Orange to escape regular floodings from the Murrumbidgee river. 

His bulls have topped the sale on a number of occasions.

Simon and Judy Hennings, Mt Hunter Angus, Camden, will offer six bulls and five females.

The bulls are semen tested, tested Pesti free and fully vaccinated. 

All stud females are PTIC, tested Pesti free and fully vaccinated.

Principal of Bandaroo Angus, Greg Watson, a well-known steward controlling the beef judging rings at Sydney Royal, and his son have been selling at the NEAB sale for several years.

This year Bandaroo will offer eight bulls with their star lot 9 sired by Millah Murrah Conversion J151.

Their property “Jarrah” is 24 km north of Gunndah and has been hit by dry weather but Mr Watson is happy with this year’s bulls.

Lachie Ware, Wongalea Angus, Duri, near Tamworth, is back for his second year at the NEAB with three bulls. His stud is based on 18 females from his grandparents’ Angus stud near Dorrigo. He also inherited their Wongalea stud prefix.

Selling agents are Chris Paterson,Tamworth, and Patrick Purtle, Purtle and Plevey Agencies, Manilla. Paul Dooley, Tamworth, will be the auctioneer. The sale starts at 1pm.
