WONDERING what to do the last few days of the school holidays?
Hotham and Falls Creek alpine resorts have never looked better with both resorts boasting the best June snow since 2000 now backed by excellent July snowfalls.
A wild storm has dumped seven centimetres of snow overnight at Mount Hotham and five centimetres at Falls Creek and that’s just the start of the storm brewing this week.
"It's a really promising forecast coming through for the weekend. We've got about 20 centimetres of snow predicted for Thursday evening which will be great for those powder hounds wanting to come up and enjoy the snow all weekend," says Hannah Beard of Mount Hotham Skiing Company.
“With the first snow coming through it's going to be perfect for the last of the school holidays and should be great for the weekend ahead. The perfect time for locals to get up here and choose which days they want to do.”
The next storm front is predicted to hit on Thursday evening with up to 20cm of light, dry powder expected to coat the resorts. The snow will continue on Friday with just one degree splitting the difference between a maximum temperature of -3 degrees at Mount Hotham and a minimum temperature of -4 degrees. At Falls Creek, it will be a similar story with a minimum of -2 degrees. There’ll be strong north-west winds from Thursday night rising to gale force at times on Friday.
"We're looking forward to a lot of snow coming through Thursday evening. Should be epic for another powder day up here at Hotham." says Hannah.
For the Border and North East, snow on our peaks (above 900 metres) will fall as rain on the lower elevations with showers forecast on Thursday and Friday. The temperature will really start to drop on Thursday night from highs of 16 degrees to a maximum of 11 degrees on Friday for Albury-Wodonga with possible small hail in the morning and afternoon.
There’s really only one way to stay dry this weekend – head for the snow.
