Drought awareness was the feature focus at the Mudgee Small Farms Field Days hosted by the Australian Rural Education Centre (AREC).
In officially opening the event AREC chairman, James Sullivan said the field days had significantly focused on drought awareness this year as many farmers and families have been effected by the harsh conditions.
“The fields days are about coming together and sharing knowledge and experiences that farmers have had on the land and drought awareness is something we have really focused on,” Mr Sullivan said.
“We have bought in key groups to this year’s event to offer their assistance to struggling farmers and also to make people aware that there is support out there.”
This year drought awareness initiatives and charities have come together to present exhibits and to talk to farmers about coping with the dry conditions and that they are not alone.
One Step Closer To Rain, Facebook page founder Cassandra McLaren set up the page for people to share how the drought affects them.
“We are all different, but we are all affected. The page is a place to add your photos and share the impacts with others,” Ms McLaren said.
“It is an opportunity to support others and to be supported. We are a mixed group of farmers, rural and city Aussies.
The One Step Closer To Rain group also supports nominated charities that are also getting involved with the harsh reality of the drought such as Rural Aid, Drought Angles, Buy a Bale and Aussie Helpers.
