Amid the dry conditions, buyers who recognised the value of quality genetics paid to $14,000 at the Truro Herefords on-property bull sale on Monday.
The top-price bull, Truro Manuel M203, was purchased by repeat clients Ian, Gayle and Ashley Hollingsworth, Ashmar Herefords, Gloucester.
The rising two-year-old was sired by Yarram Unique F181, from Truro Marianne F128, and boasted an estimated breeding value (EBV) of +6.1 for eye muscle area (EMA), +60 carcase weight, +0.7 for intramuscular fat (IMF) and +0.2 for rib fat.
Ashley Hollingsworth said Truro Manuel M203 held a lot of appeal and this was backed up by great figures.
“This bull's sire, Unique, I've been watching him for a long time and felt that he was the right bloodline to put back over our Storm and Magnum bred cows,” he said.
The second-top priced bull, Truro Moonlight M019, was purchased by Tom and Margot Woolston, Gunnedah, for $8000 and was also sired by Yarram Unique F181.
The bull boasted EBVs of +6.5 for EMA, +64 carcase weight, +0.9 IMF and +0.9 for rib fat.
The Woolstons were also the top volume buyer for the sale, taking home three bulls to top $8000 and average $6666.
Unfortunate circumstances meant Truro stud principals Scott and Pip Hann could not attend the sale, however family friend, Tyson Will, “Swinton”, Delungra, took care of proceedings on the day.
Mr Will said the Hann family presented a quality line-up of bulls.
“They were a good even line of bulls and definitely had some performance in them which was what the buyers were chasing,” he said.
Only seven of the 32 offered bulls were sold, averaging $7000.
Mr Will said he was disappointed for the Hann family, but the results weren’t surprising in the current season.
“We can't really blame people for not buying bulls at the moment because they're having to put the money that they would buy bulls with towards feed and unfortunately that’s the way the cookie crumbles at the moment,” he said.
“Scott just wants to thank the people who purchased for supporting them.”
The sale was conducted privately on a set-price basis.
