Two of Australia’s major cotton players have joined forces to build a new cotton gin in Coleambally.
Southern Cotton and Queensland Cotton have agreed ‘in principle’ to build a new cotton gin in Coleambally, in what the companies have described as a major step forward for the cotton industry in the Southern Valleys.
The multimillion-dollar cotton gin proposal, which was announced to the Coleambally community at a public meeting last night, is set to bring new jobs and opportunities to the area.
Southern Cotton chairman, Larry Walsh said that the relationship with Queensland Cotton is a natural fit for our business.
“We are excited to partner with Queensland Cotton and bring our combined ginning and marketing expertise to the regions growers,” Mr Walsh said.
“We have identified access to ginning as a bottleneck for industry expansion in the Southern Valleys and a new cotton gin in Coleambally is our way of getting in front of the problem.”
Queensland Cotton Executive General Manager, John Robinson, echoed Mr Walsh’s sentiments.
“We are thrilled to have this partnership on the table and bring together two businesses who are aligned in their vision for exceptional service,” Mr Robinson said.
“Our goal is to ensure growers have access to timely ginning and cotton quality management, as well as reap the benefits of potential transport savings,” he concluded.
Planning for the cotton gin has begun with the parties aiming to gin cotton at the new facility in the 2020 season
