THE first sons of New Zealand sire, Koanui Techno 3062, had buyers in a bidding frenzy during the 57th annual Yalgoo Bull Sale yesterday, where the top price of $20,000 was reached, twice.
Described by Yalgoo co-principal, Jock Nivison, as the perfect combination of phenotype and performance, the two top-priced bulls, both by Techno 3062, quickly caught the eye of both commercial producers and studstock breeders.
Fred Mathieu from Checkers Pastoral Company, Cargo, secured the first $20,000 high selling bull, Yalgoo Jive M160 (AI) (P) to use over his 300 commercial breeders, of which he breeds his own bulls.
The 23-month-old homozygous poll son of Koanui Techno 3062 was from Yalgoo Triple Treat D224 (P), and weighed 968 kilograms with a scrotal circumference of 43 centimeters.
With five estimated breeding values (EBVs) and index values in the top 10pc of the breed, Jive was used over stud cows within the Yalgoo herd prior to sale.
Also by Koanui Techno 3062, Yalgoo Video M195 (AI) (P), was the other equal top-priced bull who was purchased by Ben and Leanne Rumbel from Supple Hereford stud, Guyra.
Selected by the Rumbels for its skin and hair type combined with overall balance and fats, the 23½-month-old bull was from Yalgoo Vanessa E321 (ET) (P) and was also used over mature stud cows at Yalgoo.
Techno progeny had already proved they were popular in NZ, with progeny topping at $51,000 at the Koanui stud sale in June. At Yalgoo, four sons of Techno were sold to average $13,500.
The Rumbels continued their quality purchases by adding Yalgoo Mohican M205 (AI) (P) to their sire battery for $12,000.
Overall, the Nivison family sold 28 bulls of the 39 offered for a 72 per cent clearance and solid $7777 average.
Second top-priced bull was Yalgoo Pulse M103 (AI) (P), purchased for $13,000 by Tim Woodham from Landmark Wagga Wagga, on behalf of the Pearce family from Yavenvale Hereford stud, Adelong.
Tipping the scales at 910kg, the two-year-old bull was by the NJW 73S M326 Trust 100W ET sire from Yalgoo Princess E19 (P).
The sale was held in conjunction with Allan and Colleen Green from Ivy Bank Poll Herefords, Walcha, who offered six bulls. Three sold for an average of $4667.
Ivy Bank Monty M107 (AI) (ET) (P) was the top-priced Ivy Bank bull, who was secured by JG. Foster. The two-year-old weighed 990kg and was by JMS Victor 671 967 from Ivy Bank Magic J64 (AI) (ET) (P).
The sale was conducted by Elders with Andy McGeoch taking bids as the auctioneer.
