There were some outstanding pens of cattle on offer during the regular store sale at Wodonga: and although many were lighter weights due to the season, the quality of their breeding was still evident.

With 3028 grown cattle and 355 calves penned, the yarding of mostly black cattle attracted keen competition, with values firm on current trends.

Paull and Scollard, Wodonga auctioneer Luke Deimel said the sale exceeded expectations, especially on the better lines.

“We had an amazing dispersal of Angus cows with calves, which where an absolutely outstanding line of breeders cows, and they sold very well,” he said.

“Balance of the cows sold according to their quality and the price reflected that.”

Mr Deimel said pens of steers and heifers which could go straight onto feed sold really well, but light weights were hard to move.

“We were blessed with strong interest from Tasmania, which helped underpin the sale.”

Top price for cows and calves at $2060 was achieved for 32 Angus cows, Banquet and Pathfinder-blood, with Newblax Black Simmental calves and depastured Newblax Black Simmental bull sold on account Wal Wood, and estate late Nick McKimmey, trading as Georgewood, Tallangatta, Victoria.

Other sales included 14 Angus steers, weighing 378kg sold for $1140 on account Sharp Partnership, Cudgewa, Victoria and 22 Angus heifers, Te Mania-blood weighing 360kg sold by Fogarty family, Buchlyvie Pastoral, Boorhman, Vic for $960.

Buyers from Tasmania competed with strong local restocker interest with commission buyers operating on selected pens.

Wodonga agents, Paull and Scollard, BUR, Peter Ruaro Rodwells, Schubert Boers conducted the sale.
