HAVE you made up your mind which stallion you are going to send your broodmare to this stud season?
No, not yet!
Barring some high profile stallions that had the “early rush” of mares, there is still a plethora of sires from which to choose.
Recently viewing a number of second season sires, I have put together a list of some of these horses that are or will be represented with their first foals this year.
Aquis Farm at Murrurundi
Group 1 winning three-year-old Divine Prophet has his first foals on the ground. He is by Coolmore Stud’s champion Choisir, and won the MRC Caulfield Guineas.
Furnaces at Allandale Park
While having stood his first stud season at Aquis Farm, Queensland, Furnaces is continuing his stud career in NSW’s central west. By Exceed And Excel, the Darley bred and raced Furnaces won three races, including the ATC Kindergarten Stakes-G3.
Stratum Star at Widden Stud
A Dual Group 1 winner and earner of $2.4m, Stratum Star is by champion Danehill sire Stratum. Among mares expecting his first foals includes High Achiever dam of dual stakes winner She’s So High.
Xtravagant at Newhaven Park
New Zealand bred son of the versatile GB bred Pentire, Xtravagant was a champion New Zealand three-year-old colt. The dual Group 1 winner served 117 mares last season including stakes winners Media and At Ease.
Star Turn at Vinery Stud
LIKE his flashy chestnut sire Star Witness, Star Turn was a brilliant speedster winning at two, before dominating with wins in the ATC San Domenico Stakes-G3 in Sydney and MRC Schillaci Stakes-G2 in Melbourne.
Defcon at Eureka Stud Qld
By Choisir, Defcon served 63 mares at his first season last year including a half-sister to the dam of stakes winner Permai. Standing alongside Spirit Of Boom, Defcon is a Group winning two and three-year-old.
Last Typhoon at Bullarook Vic
THE only foal produced from Australian Horse Of The Year Typhoon Tracy ($2.4m) before her premature death, Last Typhoon is by champion sire Street Cry, sire also of the mighty Winx.
Better Land at Turangga
AMONG the few mares that Better Land served last year was stakes winner Rose Of Dane. The four-times winning stallion is by Shamardal, from Group 2 winning juvenile Amelia’s Dream (by Redoute’s Choice).
Coolmore Stud
US bred American Pharoah (by Mr Prospector linesire Pioneerof The Nile) and Air Force Blue (by Danzig’s War Front) both served big books of mares at its Jerrys Plains property. American Pharoah won America’s prestigious triple crown in 2015.
Sooboog at Kitchwin Hills
By champion sire Snitzel, Sooboog has developed into a gorgeous chestnut stallion. A high-priced yearling and Group winner, Sooboog is a brother to $1.9m filly Snitzerland. He served 151 mares last year.
Odyssey Moon at Twin Hills
GROUP 1 winner Apercu was among mares covered at his first season. A brown horse by Snitzel, Odyssey Moon - the foundation sire for the Cootamundra property, ended his race career on a high taking the VRC Standish Handicap-G3.
Arrowfield Stud
The first Australian foals by Irish bred Shalaa (by Invincible Spirit) and Japanese breds Maurice (Screen Hero) and Mikki Isle (Deep Impact) are here. All three stallions were Group 1 winners.
Other stallions expecting their first foals include Newgate Farm’s Golden Slipper winner Capitalist (Written Tycoon), Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) and Flying Artie (Artie Schiller); Darley Stud’s Holler, Frosted, Territories and The Last Lion; Cable Bay, De Gaulle, St Jean and Swear in Victoria; Under The Louvre in Qld; Awesome Rock and Vert De Grece in WA; Sir Prancealot in SA; Lionhearted, Tasmania.
