NARRANMORE Poll Dorsets, Elong Elong, at its spring ram sale, topped at $3000 on Friday and averaged $1450.
There were 64 of 110 rams on offer sold and one of the stud’s principals, Christine O’Leary said she was pleased with the results.
“We went into this thinking if we could sell half of them we’d be satisfied,” she said.
The offering was about 20 lots less than last year, with Mrs O’Leary and husband Ian taking the decision to hold a few back in the hope the season would take a turn for the better.
That the top price eclipsed last year’s $2300 was testimony to the faith repeat buyers have in the Narranmore rams and a strong, resilient lamb market heading into year’s end.
The top-priced May 2017 drop ram weighed in at 114kg on September 12, with an eye muscle width of 90 millimetres, depth of 44mm and with 6mm of fat covering it.
Phillip Redding, “Corrumbene”, Dunedoo, snapped up the ram and bought another seven, to top off his Poll Dorset ram requirements this year.
“We’re pretty much full up now, these rams are good, they’ve got good length,” he said.
Repeat buyers Stephen and Sally Ryan, “Kenfield” and “Rockford”, Hobby’s Yards, took the second top-priced ram home at $2800.
