Some of the leading Red Poll studs from three states will battle for the top honours in the judging ring at this year’s Royal Melbourne Show.
Red Polls are the feature breed at this year’s show for the first time since 2005 with 72 cattle catalogued to parade before the judge, Peter Cook, Barana Simmentals, Coolah.
Among the 14 exhibitors will be two life members of the Australian Red Poll Cattle Breeders Inc. – Alan Wilson, Oakwood Red Polls, Minlaton, SA, and Ross Draper, Red Cactus Red Polls, Arthurs Creek, Vic.
Mr Wilson will be joined by fellow South Australian stud breeders, Kay and Richard Daley, Moyle Park Red Polls, Jamestown.
The other Victorian exhibitors are Lynbarry Red Polls, Kinglake Central; Turanga Red Polls, Kolora; Redward Red Polls, Arthurs Creek; and Sophronites Red Polls, Pheasant Creek.
NSW will be represented by Red Rush Red Polls, Armidale; Stormley Red Polls, Barham; Omega 3 Red Polls, Quirindi; Baladeen Red Polls, Bringelly; Kookabookra Red Polls, Glen Innes; Lagoona Red Polls, Armidale; and Red Pheonix Red Polls, Tumbarumba.
Judging will start at 11am on Saturday, September 29. A feature sale will follow at 4pm with three bulls, seven females and two semen packages to go under the hammer.
The Light family will offer Lagoona Oreo, their Lagoona Red Poll stud’s grand champion bull from this year’s Sydney and Brisbane Royals.
The Storm family’s Stormley stud, the reigning Melbourne and Sydney supreme exhibit holders, will offer one bull and three females at the sale.
Two semen lots of 10 straws each from Redward Forest will be offered by Redward stud.
Online bidding will be available while the catalogue can be viewed at redpoll.org.au.
Federal president of the Australian Red Poll Cattle Breeders Inc., Gay Ward, said the show would provide opportunities to discuss the key attributes of Red Polls with breeders plus pick up information leaflets.

“Red Polls are well known for their mothering ability and longevity along with consistent award winning carcase results.
“With these attributes and having maintained their genetic purity, Red Polls are the perfect option for any stud or cross breeding operation.”
She also praised the work and support of the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria.
