INTERGRAIN has officially released a new wheat variety, Devil.
The new line is classified as an Australian Hard (AH) and Australian Premium White Noodle (APWN) line and is an early to mid-maturing line that may be useful for reducing exposure to heat stress towards the end of the season.
The variety was officially launched at the West Midlands Group spring field day in Western Australia by Intergrain wheat breeder Dan Mullan.
WA grower Alastair Falconer has grown a trial of the crop this year and is pleased with the look of the crop thus far in comparison to favourites in the district such as Westonia and Scepter.
“It has established very well, showing a strong tillering capacity, good early vigour and is proving very competitive,” he says.
Dr Mullan said Devil is a very stable, early-mid maturing wheat, with exceptional yield potential, yielding similarly to Scepter based on the WA 2013-17 Long-term National Variety Trials (NVT) MET results.
He was also thrilled to gain dual classification.
“Having both an AH and APWN classification is highly advantageous in noodle growing areas if segregation and potential price premiums are available,” he says.
