Pastures are starting to come away, and it won’t take much of a lift in the season to transform the outlook on “Belmont”, a productive mixed farming property now for sale near Narromine.
Owned by Peter Howe, whose parents bought the property in 1981, “Belmont” is being sold to enable the owner to consolidate his main operation at Trangie, the base of his Dunnield Border Leicester stud. The 1206 hectare (2980ac) property has been listed for sale by Peter Dwyer for Peter Milling and Company of Dubbo and will go to auction on October 31.
Well located, and set up with all necessary infrastructure, it stacks up as a tidy self-contained mixed farming operation, or as a versatile adjunct to an existing western or tableland grazing enterprise.
Under present management, the property is used mainly as a first-cross nursery, carrying in normal seasons (but not now) up to 2000 Merino ewes with lambs being finished on another property.
Situated 20 kilometres south-east of Narromine and 50km from Dubbo, “Belmont” comprises mostly level to gently undulating country of granite-derived and loam soils, rising to timbered hills. Back in the 1880s, the property was considered as a likely site for the proposed township of Tomingley, but the latter ended up 25km away at its present Newell Highway location, drawn by the lure of gold.
Of the total area, about 720ha (or 85 per cent) has been farmed, of which about 150ha is now sown to Yarran oats and 570ha to tropical grasses, contoured and topdressed with fertiliser and lime as required.
A further 360ha is a timbered portion running onto the Suppa Bulga Range and is fenced off, but useful for sheltered grazing. The property is watered by dams in all 13 paddocks plus frontages to two semi-permanent creeks (one still flowing, even now!).

“WOLKARA”, the Barwon River grazing property of Bill and Barbara Loughnan at Brewarrina (photo above right), was passed in unsold at last week’s auction by Schute Bell Brewarrina and Hartin Schute Bell, Narromine.
