Bidding was fast paced during the 14th annual on-property ram sale at Tallawong Merinos in Yass on account of Frank Kaveney when 119 of 139 rams sold for a $2220 average price.
Mr Kaveney was very happy with the sale result, which saw many repeat buyers purchasing replacement rams even if their drafts were a little less than in previous years because their ewe numbers were lower due to seasonal conditions.
“We are breeding a consistent type, which our clients appreciate because they know the production of wool and surplus sheep will be of that consistent type,” Mr Kaveney said.
The top price at $5500 was paid three times by Booroomba Pastoral, Tharwa, along with Avondale Pastoral Co, Bigga and W.D Blackshaw, Yeumburra, Yass.
Shaun Young, who manages the property for W.D Blackshaw, selected their first choice for his length of staple and fleece covering on a very correct body.
“We have been buying rams here for the past eight years,” Mr Young said.
“Being in the area we know the sheep with their nice bright and soft deep crimping wool suits our country.”
Within their self-replacing Merino flock, where 1900 ewes are joined, fleece cut averages 5.5kg across the flock with average 17micron.
“We have just finished lamb marking and averaged 105 per cent,” Mr Young said.
Volume buyers included Reynolds Pastoral Co, Young, who bought six rams to average $2125.
The sale was settled by Landmark, Yass, with Rick Power auctioneer.
