When Julie Brown came home to the creek flowing through her Hunter Valley property she couldn’t believe her eyes.
“It’s the first time the creek has flowed in 1.5 years,” Mrs Brown said.
“We left Aberdeen (20km away) which didn’t get a drop to find we copped a freak storm at home.”
Mrs Brown said around 25mm fell on their property at Rouchel, which would bring some relief as they had been carting water for a year.
“I’ve lived in Rouchel for 20 years and this is the first time we’ve had to cart water,” she said.
“Driving around the paddocks we can hear a squashing noise from the tyres, which is nice to hear.”
While the spring rain has brought relief for some, others watch on as the rain passes them by.
At Pincally Station, north of Broken Hill, they heard thunder, then saw lightning and got excited.
But Zanna Gale said what followed produced nothing more than six spots of rain.
“Come on Mother Nature,” Mrs Gale said.
The Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Katarina Kovacedic said it looks “fairly wet” over the north east corner of the state for the rest of the day and tomorrow with storm activity.
Heading into the weekend, Ms Kovacedic said there was a tough system moving through western and central parts of the state.
In the 24 hours to 9am this morning high rainfalls outside Sydney included Aldavilla (west of Kempsey) 78mm, Elsmore 56mm, Webbs Creek 53mm and Howes Valley 31mm.
Penrith copped one month of rain in a hour with 70mm
The weekly rainfall bulletin (until October 17) saw: Murwillumbah 203mm, Dorrigo 200mm, Coffs Harbour 165mm, Tabulam 158mm, Griffith 43mm, Wee Waa 37mm, Deniliquin and Armidale 32mm, Gunnedah 25mm.
There is a minor flood warning on the Bellinger River at Thora with a potential for thunderstorms in the catchment today, which may lead to renewed river rises.
Tamworth rain update
In Tamworth, producers slept through a welcome calm-paced shower overnight with the Bureau of Meteorology recording 18 millimetres at the airport.
It stretched south of the township too with Margaret Green Hanson receiving "a lovely 13 millimetres" at Kingswood while Jude Costello reported 52 millimetres had fallen south of Armidale and more than 30 millimetres in the township.
Jude's own property, also in the Armidale district, wasn't as fortunate though.
"Single figures here, it was quite audible, which is a tease when it's that close," she said.
Yesterday Joce Doran reported a solid 67 millimetres had fallen at Baradine, north of Coonabarabran.
