Severe storms are predicted across almost the entire eastern half of NSW today as the bureau issued a severe weather warning.
“It appears likely large sections of New South Wales and the ACT could experience Severe Thunderstorms, including metropolitan areas, particularly on Saturday,” the Bureau said.
“ Sydney is hosting a number of major events this weekend including: the Royal visit; the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games (and events themselves); and the X Games.”
Saturday will most likely see storm activity focused on central and southern parts of the state, including Sydney.
The storms are most likely in the afternoon and evening, the Bureau said..
"It is possible these storms could impact on several major events in the city, including the Invictus Games Opening Ceremony at the Opera House and the X Games at Homebush," Bureau of Meteorology NSW/ACT Manager of Weather Services, Jake Phillips says.
At this stage, it is likely Sunday will see the area of greatest thunderstorm risk move to the state’s north-east, while other areas may still experience heavy rainfall at times
Large areas of the state have already seen severe thunderstorms this week.
"Due to the speed, volatility and potential impacts of thunderstorms it is recommended people pay particular attention to warnings issued by the Bureau of Meteorology and other emergency agencies," Mr Phillips advised.
