A Poll Merino ram offered by the Henderson family of Grogansworth Merinos, Bowning, topped the stud’s 11th annual on-property ram sale yesterday.
Purchased by Robert Cox and Paivi Torronen from Avondale, Manildra, the Grogansworth 170573 ram made the sale topping price fo $6500.
Sired by artificial insemination sire Willandra Desmond, the poll ram weighed in at 108 kilograms and was 20.2 in the micron with a standard deviation (SD) of 2.9, fibre diameter coefficient of variation (CV) 14.1 per cent, comfort factor (CF) 99.4pc and a greasy fleece weight (GFW) of 102pc.
Mr Cox said he saw the ram at the field days and was impressed by the upcoming sire as he was everything they were looking for.
“I liked his size, wool, structure and figures,” he said.
“He will be used over select ewes.”
Mr Cox and Ms Torronen secured a total of three rams to add to their flock, including a second ram for $5000.
The second top price of $5500 was reached on five occasions.
In the breakdown, 87 rams sold at auction of the 102 offered for a 85pc clearance and a $2155 average.
A number of the passed in rams sold following the sale.
The sale was conducted by Schute Bell Badgery Lumby and Macdonald and Co Woolbrokers, with guest auctioneer Paul Dooley, Tamworth, taking the bids.
