Regional NSW is the largest and most diverse regional economy in Australia, home to 2.9 million people and expected to grow to 3.3 million in 2036.
The NSW Government is putting quality strategic planning front and centre in the regions to create healthier built environments, and help regional NSW communities reach their potential, according to a department spokesman.
“For a start, for the first time in the state’s history we’ve introduced regional plans for the whole of NSW,” the spokesman said.
“These nine regional plans establish a narrative of the preferred scenario for the future around which local actions and delivery platforms, like a Local environmental plan or infrastructure plan, can be developed.
“So the vision for the Riverina/Murray region is for it to be a diversified economy founded on Australia’s food bowl, iconic waterways and a network of vibrant and connected communities.
“The Central West and Orana region can now look forward to seeing the Orange Hospital Precinct Masterplan come to fruition in response to their established vision.
“In the far west, the NSW Government is implementing improved land management arrangements.
“This is to support the emerging goat industry, and in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven work is underway to develop a 20-year Southern Marine Tourism Strategy.
“The Hunter is envisioned to become the leading regional economy in Australia, with a vibrant new metropolitan city at its heart.
“The vision for the south-east and tablelands region includes a strategy to promote the Snowy Mountains as a year-round destination.
“In the New England/North West, important agricultural land is being identified to inform local strategic planning.
“Action plans for the North Coast cities of Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Lismore and Tweed Heads are also being prepared to promote employment growth, housing diversity and place-making.
“These regional plans provide the framework for NSW Government to partner with communities and industry and start conversations about regional planning issues in a collaborative way.”
