Red Bend Catholic College at Forbes has claimed supreme champion carcase of the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza.
With a score of 94.15 points under the Meat Standards Australia (MSA) grading system, the heavy weight Limousin steer called Redman was bred by Phil and Sheridan Kirk, Wilworril Limousins, Peak Hill.
Fed for about 160 days, the steer weighed 514 kilograms on the hoof and placed fourth in his class. Over the hook with a hot standard carcase weight of 304.8kg, it dressed 59.3 per cent with 10 millimetres of fat on both the rib and rump, an eye muscle area of 102sq centimetres and a MSA Index of 60.15.
The top carcase also took out the heavy weight and overall jackpot, and the highest scoring Limousin or Limousin cross carcase.
Overall reserve champion carcase went to Gloucester High School with their heavy weight Angus cross Limousin steer that was reserve heavy weight champion with a score of 93.46.
The supreme exhibit on the hoof, a Murray Grey from St Mary’s College, won its class in the carcase judging with a score of 92.69 and was the highest placed Murray Grey on the hook.
The heavy middle weight champion and middle weight jackpot winner scoring 90 points was Darryl Johnston’s Charolais cross Angus steer.
Reserve champion heavy middleweight went to Macarthur Anglican School with their Limousin steer that scored 89.45.
Champion light middle weight on the hoof from St Joseph’s High School Aberdeen also took out division champion on the hook with 89.34 points. It placed in front of the Dubbo College’s Limousin cross Simmental steer with a score of 89.21 that received reserve.
Lightweight champion went to Wingham High School’s Charolais cross Angus steer that scored 90.73, with reserve going to Coonamble High School Bovine Appreciation Club with their 89.40 point-scoring Shorthorn cross Red Angus.
Unled champion carcase went to a Charolais cross Angus from Muswellbrook High School with a total of 91.38 points. The Memory of Brian James received reserve champion unled carcase with a South Devon cross steers that scored 90.96.

Willow Tree Public School won the Waverley School Steer Challenge with their SSC 2 Angus steer tallying up 87.67 points.
