Australian country music legend Slim Dusty lived the life he sang about – of drought time with land “barren, brown an' bare” and rolling rain.
So it couldn’t be more fitting than to hold a drought fundraiser in the Slim Dusty Centre at Kempsey on the Mid North Coast.
Inside the room where Slim Dusty memorabilia lines the walls, around 180 people dug deep for the Kempsey Showgirl Ball and Charity Auction on Saturday.
The event, hosted by the Kempsey Show Society, raised more than $18,000 from raffles and auctions, with money going towards the Country Women’s Association Drought Relief.
The event not only provided an opportunity for the current Kempsey Showgirl Elizabeth Jackson to raise money for a worthy cause but was also designed to promote the role of Miss Showgirl in the community.
The Country Women’s Association Drought Relief is run by rural women and provides support for drought-stricken families.
A number of local businesses supported the charity ball including Kempsey Stock and Land, Macleay Options, Macleay Valley Veterinary Services, Coastline Credit Union, Ellerslie Flowers and Eagle Insurance.
