Champagne opened the sale and the good times flowed throughout the two-day Anvil Angus dispersal held on property at Acheron in Victoria last week where prices hit $52,000 to gross $2.35 million.
Anvil Angus principal Stephen Handbury summed it up perfectly when he said there was plenty of good buying for everyone.
“The donor females were well received and sold well, with the Lowan donor cow knocking it out of the park,” he said.
The female he spoke of, Anvil Lowan H126, sold to a partnership of Banquet Angus, Mortlake, and Bannaby Angus, Taralga, for the top price of $52,000.
The cow described a “prolific embryo producer” was sired by imported embryo from Sitz Angus Anvil Endless E160 and out of a foundation Te Mania Y147. She sold with a July born heifer calf by Black Aqua Lucifer.
In a break down of the sale, 24 donor cows averaged $9708 while 233 cow and calf units averaged $3689.
Another 180 PTIC cows averaged $3058 and 52 joined heifers averaged $2615. Yearling heifers topped at $21,000 with 106 averaging $2981.
Weaner heifers topped at $8000 and averaged $1594 for the 95 sold while 10 embryo transfer calves and recipient dams topped at $10,500 and averaged $4300. Three stud sires to top at $10,000 and average $6833.
Thirteen embryo packages consisting of 72 embryos sold to a top of $650/embryo to average $322/embryo.
Another 23 semen packages consisting of 644 units sold to a top of $125/unit to average $25/unit.
Leading the charge on day two, donor cow Anvil Ella H036 sold for $35,000 to Spring Hill Angus, Woodlands.
Anvil Vitality D019 sold to the same partnership of Banquet and Bannaby Angus for $15,000 while Anvil Lowan G072 was purchased by a partnership of Merridale Angus, Tennyson, and Crawford Angus, Adjungbilly, for $14,500.
There was plenty of excitement amongst the yearling heifers with Anvil Jilt N411 selling on day one to East West Angus, Bingara, for $17,500. However, this was outdone on day two when a daughter of the $52,000 sale topper, Anvil Lowan N396, sold to Adameluca Angus, Kyneton, for $21,000.
Adameluca also partnered up with Ardrossan Angus, Holbrook, to purchase Anvil Jilt N436 for $18,000.
Individually, Adameluca secured an embryo transfer heifer calf, Anvil Lowan P456, for $10,500.
Anvil’s Mr Handbury said it was thrilling to see some special heifers sell particularly well.
“There was ample opportunity for buyers at every price point to operate with a number of new Angus breeders operating as well as some bigger producers putting together large numbers of cattle,” he said.
With such a large draft on offer, buyers bought in bulk.
Palgrove Pastoral put together a draft of 57 females for a $3851 average with their genetics manager Ben Noller taking the opportunity to increase the top end of their seedstock herd.
“We have been able to put together a draft of clean skinned maternal type cows with plenty of volume,” he said.
Frank and Andis Sorraghan, Wagga Wagga, selected 49 females for a $2612 average, East West Angus secured 46 females averaging $3255 and two semen packages while Larnoo Ag, Yea, purchased 34 females for a $2176 average.
