Whatever the outcomes of the NSW and federal elections in the coming months, it’s a safe bet to say our political environment is set for a shake-up.
As the largest member of the National Farmers’ Federation, NSW Farmers is not only guiding our advocacy efforts on a state level, but we’re at the forefront of influencing policies nationally that benefit the farmers of this state.
The year 2019 will be about making competition work for small businesses and consumers.
Whether it is large energy retailers ripping off consumers, or the duopolistic supermarket sector unfairly squeezing small businesses like farmers.
NSW Farmers will push:
- The ACCC to work harder and increase its enforcement and compliance activities in food supply chains.
- Urge NSW Government to establish the Office for the Farm Advocate to investigate competition issues impacting farmers.
- Seek improved regulation of energy markets to ensure that farmers only pay for costs associated with a competitive energy market.
- Continuing to inform and influence governments in the development of a National Drought Strategy to maintain the value and productivity of farmers across NSW is paramount.
- Maintenance of good road infrastructure during drought
- Ensuring the Travelling Stock Reserves Review results in improved access and clarity of use for farmers and graziers.
- Our young farmers also want to see action on improving access to farm finance through stamp duty exemptions and low-interest loans.
We have a busy year ahead, but we’re excited about what we’ll be delivering for our members.
- NSW Farmers’ president, James Jackson.
