MORE than 20,000 sheep, the majority being first-cross ewes, cleared to Central and Southern Tablelands districts and Riverina during the 40th annual Forbes first-cross ewe sale on Thursday with 10 month-old unjoined first-cross ewes selling to a top of $322.
This was paid for a draft of 230 March/April 2018 November shorn first-cross ewes of Darriwell blood and sired by Glamis Border Leicester rams bred and offered by the Jones family, The Troffs, Trundle.
The Troffs’ draft had earlier won the best presented pen trifecta having been awarded the prize for the third consecutive year and has won the award four times in seven years.
Buyers were Brian and Lorraine Frost of Hillden Poll Dorset stud, Bannister near Crookwell through Landmark Goulburn agent, Michael Laing.
The Troffs sold 1300 ewes aged from 10 months down to six months at the sale.
Joined ewes were also in demand with regular vendor breeder Garry Sunderland, Currajong Park, Fifield, who gained $286 for his draft of 148 July/August 2017 drop first-cross ewes of Darriwell blood and November shorn and 100 per cent scanned in lamb to homebred Poll Dorset rams of Ashbank blood.
In the Merino section regular seller, the Green family, Ollieview, Parkes, were paid $200 a head for their draft of 270 Merino ewes May 2017 drop of Haddon Rig blood growing 20.5 micron wool.
