BEEF breed females featured at Barnawartha, Thursday, covered a large range of breeds, age and quality.
Wodonga agents combined together to have just one, all beef breeds annual joined female sale, this year.
In the yarding of 1120 head, there was a lot of very good quality cattle penned.
Most of the cattle penned were heifers, some 2.5 to three years, and a good number of rising two-year-old heifers. A small percentage were offered with young calves, with the larger number being sold PTIC to calve mostly from February to April.
Most of the producers selling at Barnawartha, source young heifers from several annual calf sales, then grow them out and join them, mostly to Angus bulls.
Despite the very tough seasons in 2018, there were some very heavy, and very good quality heifers sold.
Heifers with young calves sold on behalf of S and J Goldworsthy, Beechworth, sold to $1920, topping the calved female section.
Seasonsong Pty Ltd, Rubins Run, Talgarno, sold 36 young cows with calves for $1630 and $1640, all quite good sales, in the current hot climate.
Later in the sale, some older cows with calves were offered, and these sold mostly between $920 and $1550. “Inverleigh”, Table Top, sold 20 Angus cows, 4 years, with calves at foot, for $1730, topping this cow and calf section.
Repeat buyers set a solid pace for some of the regular lines of joined Angus heifers.
MJ Garvey, Chiltern, sold a run of 73 Angus heifers, 2.5 years, PTIC to Rennylea Angus bulls, which will commence calving early February.
Competition, mostly from local districts, was very good, and prices ranged from $1680 to the market’s top price of $1930.
Charlock Partnership, Charleroi, are another regular seller, here at Barnwartha, this year offering 94 Angus heifers of very good quality. These sold between $1440 and $1820 with their rising two-year-old heifers making the best money.
Seasonsong P/L, sold a large run of younger heifers, that weighed from 475 to 572 kilograms (liveweight).
Many of these heifers were purchased from Wodonga and Mountain calf sales, and joined especially for this sale. The top price for these heifers was $1780 with most selling between $1100 and $1350.
The larger percentage of the offering was Angus cattle, but Shorthorn/Hereford, Angus/Hereford heifers were also sold.
Anita Morant sold well grown Angus heifers PTIC to a Limousin bull for $1710, and Langibella, Myrtleford, sold Simmental heifers PTIC to Simmental bulls for $1590.
There were also Blonde D’aquitaine heifers, PTIC to Limousin bulls, that sold for $1420.
