Goulburn conditioner Kurt Goulburn received some extra spending money at the Highway Session of Inglis’ Book Two Classic Yearling Sale, when his gelding Safe Landing won the $50,000 Inglis Country Highway race at Warwick Farm last week.

A race restricted to country trained gallopers, the Inglis Highway also carried a $50,000 credit voucher for Inglis sale graduates paid up for their race series for trainers at the following day’s auction – Safe Landing among them.
Safe Landing was bred by well-known Hawkesbury equine veterinarian Ian Duckworth. His immediate family’s property Fairview Park Stud, Grose Wold, reared and sold the four-year-old at the 2016 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale for $130,000.
Knocked down to the trainer, Safe Landing is by reliable sire Magic Albert who stands at Kooringal Stud, near Wagga Wagga.
The gelding edged out another Inglis graduate, Professor Marx, trained by Scone’s Rodney Northam, who paid $4200 for the Bon Hoffa galloper at the 2014 Scone Select Yearling Sale, the horse since returning more than $152,000.
More favoured runners Common Purpose (by I Am Invincible) was third, and Our Rosemaree (Bernardini) fourth.
Inglis also hosted the $50,000 Inglis Provincial Highway race on the same program.
While not eligible for its $50,000 Inglis Highway Sale session credit, Archedemus was impressive when winning the 1300 metre event.
Trained by Gwenda Markwell at Kembla Grange, Archedemus made it three successive wins when taking out the race for his owner/breeder Ross Williams.
By former Irish bred shuttle horse Lope De Vega (Shamardal), Archedemus is on track for a tilt at the $500,000 Provincial Championships Final at Randwick on April 13.
While Canberra conditioner, Gratz Vella had to be content with a third placing with Stephan in an earlier sprint, he had a happy return trip to the capital after his outsider, Mixed Blossom, won the last race.
The sixth win for the Time Thief mare, Mixed Blossom was ridden by Gosford apprentice Jenny Duggan, who was having her first ride for the Vella stable.
Highway credit handy for Goldman
Kurt Goldman put his $50,000 Inglis credit to good use at the Highway Session of the Classic Yearling Sale late, when paying $70,000 for a colt by Vinery Stud’s handsome first crop sire Press Statement, from Sin Sin Sin.
The equal third top priced youngster from the session, the colt was sold via Kitchwin Hills, Scone, as agent. The other $70,000 yearling was for a colt by the Kooringal Stud based Duporth, and sold from Toolooganvale Farm, Scone.
Tim and Celie Nolan’s Wingen breeding property Murrulla had a magical week at the Inglis sales, not only topping Book One of its Classic Yearling Sale, but also its Book Two Highway Session.
Nolan’s Highway Session topper was for a colt by deceased Testa Rossa sire Unencumbered, from winning Commands mare Malbun, which fetched $85,000, and sold to Peter Twomey’s Wattle Bloodstock for Thomas Loke’s Tivic Stable at Kranji, in Singapore.
Progeny of Arrowfield Stud’s Dundeel continued to be popular, with a filly from Replacement Miss selling for $75,000 from Evergreen Stud Farm, Heatherbrae.
An 85 per cent clearance was achieved at the Highway Session from the 144 sold lots. Buyers spent a total $3.638 million, for an average of $25,264.
The Nolan’s week began with its record breaking Classic Yearling Sale top price at $550,000, for the colt by Victorian based sire Brazen Beau (by I Am Invincible), who is represented with his first juveniles racing this season.
Sold to Bruce Perry Bloodstock, the Murrulla colt (who was produced from Dubawi winning mare Pouter) became the second successive record priced colt by Brazen Beau to top the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. Last year it was Tyreel Stud’s Brazen Beau colt – now named Potentia, which fetched $480,000, and is yet to race.
Meanwhile, five-year-old mare Lucciola Belle, by Casino Prince and trained by Taree’s Wayne Wilkes, won the Mid North Coast Racing Association’s Country Championships Qualifier at Port Macquarie.
The Provincial Championships begin at Hawkesbury on Sunday, with its $150,000 1400 metre qualifier a highlight on the card.
