ANGUS breeders are celebrating 100 years of Angus Australia at the Sydney Royal Show this year with a huge field of entries in the judging, a special grand parade and an international judge.
More than 300 exhibits have been entered in the judging competitions at the show, a huge jump from the 180-odd a normal year attracts.
Angus feature show sub-committee chairman Tim Lord said they had cattle coming from every state across Australia.
"This is going to be the biggest Angus event ever in Australia so everybody is pretty excited," Mr Lord said.
He said the Sydney Royal showcase would be the biggest feature the breed was doing this year and had been in the planning for years.
"I don't think we are going to have another event like this for quite awhile," he said.
"A lot of people are bringing back past champion cows and cows that have won different Royal shows so the quality is going to be as high as it's ever been.
"Although the drought is giving us a bit of grief people are still bringing their A-game and their best cattle."
The cattle to be shown are from 63 exhibitors with 119 bulls and 207 females entered. In the steer judging 65 steers have been entered, so far.
To mark the centenary, Angus Australia has got judge William McLaren Jnr of Netherton Angus, Perthshire, Scotland, to bring his expert eye to the ring in his first judging appearance in Australia.
Judging kicks off at noon on Saturday, April 13, with the Angus bulls. The females and group classes will take place the following day from 10:30am.
Both days will be livestreamed on The Land's Sydney Royal page, www.theland.com.au/news/sydney-royal, so those who can't be in Sydney don't have to miss a moment of the judging.
The steers competition kicks off on April 11 at 9am and will be followed by the youth events.
The steer show will be host to three divisions and will also include the selection of the Angus team of three steers to compete in the Stan Hill Trophy.
For the younger members of Angus Australia, the youth competitions this year include bred and owned classes, paraders competitions, and junior judging.
Angus Youth are also hosting a photography competition which is open to all Angus Australia members aged 8 to 25.
A special grand parade will take place to celebrate the 100 years of Angus at the Royal on Friday night.
The parade will be held in the Main Arena and be lead by a 15 piece pipe band.
Mr Lord said Angus Australia was hoping 150 to 200 people and cattle would participate.
