BURRAWANG genetics buyers of longstanding competed strongly for the complete catalogue offering of the 13th on farm sale at Ootha on Monday, March 18.
For the sixth consecutive year the sale effected a complete auction clearance when 90 Dorper and White Dorper rams sold to a top of $4000 and averaged $1492 at the Autumn sale.
Longstanding clients from NSW, Victoria and South Australia including Swan Hill and Barham, north to Balranald and up to Broken Hill provided the greatest buying strength securing 57 Dorper rams to $2700 twice for a $1576 average and 33 White Dorper rams to $4000 and $1347 average.
Rams of natural conception included 13 Dorpers to $2700 and $1662 average and six White Dorpers to $1750, averaging $1300.
The AI or embryo transfer conception offering resulted in 44 Dorper rams to $2700 averaging $1551 and 27 White Dorpers to $4000 averaging $1357.
Stud principal Graham Pickles, said it was pleasing to see another sale clearing all rams at auction.
"This is our sixth sale in a row with 100 per cent total clearance which shows the depth of support for our Burrawang genetics," he said.
"Returning clients know the consistency, reliability and performance of Burrawang-bred rams as we are focussed on the commercial outcomes of maximising efficient meat production through grazing, and we are pleased they keep coming back."
Looking for a new sire to advance the genetic progress of Eastern White Dorper stud Peter and Penny Dagg, Murrumbateman, paid the $4000 top money on the day.
This was for the White Dorper son of Burrawang Eminem and from a Burrawang Scion sired dam weighing 79 kilograms and displaying an eye muscle depth (EMD) of 37 millimetres.
The Type 5 ram will be the successor to the Dagg's current sire from Superior Genetics. Currently Eastern stud is running 30 White Dorper ewes and 80 Dorper ewes at Wallaby Hills.
Peter Dagg said he and Penny adhered as closely as they could to DSSA breed standards and looked for long, straight backs, good conformation, feet and legs.
"We already have good shedding and we want to maintain this with the new Burrawang sire," Mr Dagg said.
Repeat buyer for at least 10 years, Simon Renfrey, Ramps Bridge Station, Balranald, purchased eight Dorper rams for the Harris family for an average of $2175, topping at $2700.
This money was paid for a 98kg son of Burrawang Blinki (by Prieska Bliksem) and from a Cronje sired Burrawang dam. The Type 4 ram had a 35mm EMD and 5mm of fat.
Mr Renfrey said he was joining 8500 ewes on two properties between Balranald and Hay and finished lambs in their feedlot with 90pc going direct to Coles Supermarkets.
Rod and Linda Chalmers, Riversleigh, Barham, located 60km east of Swan Hill, Vic, returned for their 11th year to purchase nine Dorper rams for an average $1533 and topping at $2000 twice.
The first $2000 ram was a naturally conceived commercial Type 3 son of Burrawang Old Mate (by Cronje) and from a Burrawang dam, weighing 77kg with 29mm EMD.
The other at $2000 was a stud Type 4 son of Burrawang Michael Jackson from a Burrawang dam of full Kaya blood weighing 84kg with a 33mm EMD.
Long-term trading partners with a large Dorper flock on the Darling River southeast of Broken Hill, Tandou Limited, purchased 20 Dorper rams for a $1553 average while topping at $2000.
This money was for the naturally conceived son of Burrawang Digger (by B Old Mate) and from a dam sired by Burrawang Michael Jackson weighing 90.5kg with and EMD of 35mm.
Tandou's livestock general manager, Paul Martin, said classing ewes was constantly performed and the rams purchased would be joined to the latest classed maiden ewes.
Three Dorper rams were bought by Lincoln Old for the K and D Old partnership, Bourke, currently running 10,000 Dorper and White Dorper ewes.
The top at $2700 was a naturally conceived 83kg son of Burrawang Young Mate from a Burrawang dam with a 29mm EMD.
Peter and Rhi Chalmer, Swan Hill, secured 11 White Dorper rams for a $1282 average and one dorper rams at $1250.
Keera Station, Lake Cullulleraine, Mildura, bought eight rams including five White Dorper to $1350 twice, averaging $1250 and three Dorpers averaging $1150.
Darren Old said the they were now joining 3000 which came from Pooncarie over several years and being joined to Burrawang rams in the past two years.
Garry and Ros Griffiths, Baymore Station, Pan Ban, bought six rams - two White Dorpers at $1400 ech and four Dorpers averaging $1275.
Tom Gaston, Balranald, purchased two White Dorper rams to $1250 and two Dorper rams to $1100.
Cannonbar Station, Nyngan, bought two White Dorper rams at $1750 and $1500.
The sale was conducted by BR&C Agents, Swan Hill, with auctioneer duties shared by Joe O'Reilly and Jason Morrison.
Burrawang stud's Spring sale will be held on Monday, October 14.
