The Water portfolio has been split from the old Primary Industries ministry in the new Berejiklian-Barilaro government, with Adam Marshall taking the new portfolio of Agriculture and Western NSW.
With Niall Blair stepping down, the Government has reacted to anger over water issues by splitting Water from Ag and handing it to Melinda Pavey in her new ministry of Water, Property and Housing.
Adam Marshall will obviously also try to calm the waters in the new role as Minister for Western NSW. The Nationals lost two vast western electorates, Murray and Barwon, to the Shooters Party in the election.
Also Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson has been promoted to the NSW cabinet as the new Minister for Regulation and Innovation.
The new ministry was announced on Sunday. Meantime, Paul Toole has been elected the new NSW Deputy Nationals leader. John Barilaro remains leader and still has oversight over many regional issues as regional NSW Minister.
A new portfolio of Regional Youth has been created, with Regional Women and Mental Health taken on by MLC Bronnie Taylor, of Nimmitabel, a close ally of Barilaro.
Mr Barilaro said the new Ministry will hone in on key challenges and opportunities in the regions like never before. "Our Government has always recognised that the regions face different challenges than our cities, and this new team takes that to another level," Mr Barilaro said.
"The ongoing drought is still the major issue impacting on our communities, particularly in the State's West. That is why we have introduced a dedicated minister for Western NSW while also introducing a Minister for Water.
"Our new Ministers for Regional Youth and Regional Transport will also target the unique needs in our communities and will deliver real positive outcomes on the ground."
Paul Toole takes over Regional Transport and Roads.
