In the outback, where the weather is as dry as the humour, Packsaddle is putting on an event that has just a hint of quirkiness.
The Packsaddle Gymkhana and Bikekhana, held this weekend, not only showcases great horsemanship and off-road motorbike racing but it also will be hosting novelty events called catch the greasy pig and the slippery saddle. The first is exactly how it sounds. They oil up a pig and chase it around and the second tests those rodeo-loving folk on the back of a 44-gallon drum.
"Events like this are good as everyone gets together, what I love is mums and dads and children coming with horses and bikes for the two days," Gymkhana treasurer and secretary Lisa O'Connor said.
"We give a lot of money to charity, first we give to the Royal Flying Doctors and then other local charities in Broken Hill."
Every year they usually raise around $10,000 with an additional $15,000 in prize money for the horse and bike events, respectively held on Saturday and Sunday.
