A REAL standout, was how Gavin Wall described the supreme schools sheep exhibit of Sydney Royal Show.
The veteran agricultural teacher of Tintern Grammar, Ringwood East, Vic, who judged the schools sheep section for the third consecutive year, chose a two-tooth-and-over Texel ram for his champion ram and supreme exhibit.
The ram was bred and exhibited by Braidwood Central School's own 15 year-old Monkittee Texel stud established with the help of head agriculture teacher, Mick Wall.
At 20-months this ram is by the Glenarbian champion Texel ram of the 2015 Adelaide Royal Show and from a Monkittee ewe of Cranbrook blood.
The judge said when you put a lot of muscle on any animal, it's very difficult to get the structure correct so it enabled them to walk correctly.
"This ram was a real standout for all breeders and particularly the Texel breed. It's really difficult to get that right, but the ram is beautifully proportioned and well put together and he isn't massively big.
"A mid-range type of sheep that I think suits the industry."
Monkittee stud also won the pair of rams any age class.
Mr Wall said it was his third year and thoroughly enjoy the show.
"But more importantly it's great to see all these young people enthusiastic and bringing along great school sheep, coming out and competing on school holidays," he said.
"Now that says something about them, their teachers and their parents and everyone who has enabled them to come here to compete."
Close to 70 agriculture class students from five schools came with their school's sheep exhibits as part of their school agriculture curriculum.
Champion ewe was a Corriedale coming from Trinity Catholic College, Goulburn, who only established their Trinity stud two years ago with two ewes from the Prell family's Gundowringa stud, Crookwell.
This ewe had earlier won the longwool two-teeth-and-over class.
Trinity college brought two ewes to Sydney plus 16 students.
Reserve champion ram award went to a Suffolk from Peel stud, operated by Peel High School, Tamworth, who also took out reserve champion ewe award.
The school had eight students looking after its 12 entries.
A team of 16 students with 16 sheep were attending from St Lawrences Primary School, Coonabarabran.
The school's Bimbadeen Dorset Horn and Coolcappa Poll Dorset studs won the winning pair of ewes class and was placed third in the pair of rams class.
