The grand champion led steer carcase award at this year's Ekka has gone over the border, with Tenterfield High School claiming the Ken Crotty OAM Perpetual Trophy.
Tenterfield High School accumulated 98 points for a medium weight Angus cross steer that tipped the scales at 436kg with a carcase weight of 265kg and a dressing percentage of 60.8pc.
It had P8 and rib fat of 8mm and 6mm, an eye muscle area of 97 square centimetres and a pH of 5.63.
The grand champion steer was also awarded the Woolworths champion medium weight carcase.
But the led steer jackpot competition has stayed in Queensland with top honours going to Travis Luscombe, Toowoomba who took out the led steer jackpot on hoof medium weight and heavyweight divisions and first place in class 6B for a carcass from a led steer weighing 461kg-490kg.
The purebred Limousin steer named Ripper, bred at Clifton, ended up with 92 carcase points out of 100. The win came off the back of Mr Luscombe's grand champion led steer accolade in the ring on Wednesday.
"When we picked the steer, I like him for his length and he always had a good strong top line, the sort of steer that was soft enough that he was going to cover up well and it looks like he's hit the nail on the head," he said.
"King Kong was the grand champion in the led steers the other day and this fellow Ripper, he was the champion middle weight on the hoof and then he won his carcase class today and when they added those two points together, the hoof and the hook points, that's what got us over the line to win the overall jackpot."
The champion junior led heifer carcase was won by Scots PGC College, Warwick, Qld, while champion junior led steer carcase was won by St Johns College, Dubbo.
The Woolworths champion light weight carcase and the SSF Melrose Memorial Trophy went to George Massam, Biddaddaba, Qld, for a Limousin steer with a live weight of 378kg, carcase weight of 232kg, 8mm P8 fat, 6mm rib fat and an EMA of 90 sq cm.
Taking out the Woolworths heavyweight carcase and the Barry Conroy memorial trophy was the Nicholls family, Kyogle, with a Limousin cross steer with a live weight of 650kg, carcase weight of 412kg, 10mm P8 fat, 8mm rib fat and an EMA of 139 sq cm.
