There were 2414 head of mostly light, mixed quality cattle at the Wodonga Special Store Sale last Thursday.
Craig Schubert of Schubert Boers said a large percentage of the cattle were from northern, drought effected areas.
"There was a lot of light cattle, weaners that were lacking condition and had obviously been doing it tough," Mr Schubert said.
"There wasn't a lot of calves over 300 kilograms in the sale, the large majority were under 250kg."
Mr Schubert said while heavy cattle were hard to find they held their value, steers weighing over 250kg selling from $810 to $1440 a head and heifers from $500 to $1400.
A run of 35 Hereford cows with their first calves from BA and K Dawson, Benambra, Victoria, sold to a top of $1330 and $1275 averaged.
One of the top lines of steers were eight Angus, weighing 467kg, offered by Latteria Holdings, Tawonga, Vic which went for $1440.
Yearling steers sold from $1075 to $575. A run of 100 Angus steer calves, offered by Widgiewa Station, Morundah, and weighing from 272kg to 312kg went for a top of $970.
In the heifers a line of 12 Angus cattle weighing 353kg from Bateria Holdings sold for $1070 a head.
While, a run of 66 Angus heifers offered by Cooplacurripa Station, Walcha, and weighing 250kg topped at $715 a head.
Mr Schubert said the lighter cattle sold to a cheaper trend because of the influx of light cattle entering the market.
Steers weighing under 250kg sold from $200 to $600 while heifers sold from $290 to $620 a head.
A line Shorthorn steers from St Clair Livestock and eligible for JBS' Thousand Guineas program, weighed 170kg and sold for $500.
Jim Hiscock from Brian Unthank said there was a lot of cattle weighing just 120kg and their cents a kilogram value ranged significantly depending on their condition.
"They've obviously been weaned and sent down because of the season," Mr Hiscock said.
The sale was driven by mostly local support with buyers from TB White, Ballarat, active as well as interest from South Australia.
The sale was conducted by Albury-Wodonga Independent Stock Agents including Corcoran Parker, Schubert Boers, Brian Unthank and Peter Ruaro.
