Poll Merinos were in hot demand on Tuesday at the annual Brundanella Merino and Poll Merino on-property sale held at Victoria Park, Grenfell.
The March shorn, July/August 18 drop rams, reached a sale average of $1688, with rams reaching a top of $4250 on three occasions at auction.
Of the 78 rams on offer, 56 sold during auction with a further three rams selling immediately after auction.
A private sale agreement worth $9000 was reached at the conclusion of the sale with Bob Crawford, Windouran Station, Moulamein, purchasing Brundanella 18-022 sired by Moorundie Poll NE20.
18-022 weighed in at 102kg and had a fibre diameter (FD) of 20.9, standard deviation (SD) of 3.8 and an eye muscle depth (EMD) of 37.5 millimeters.
First of the top priced rams reached was Brundanella 18-014 sired by Big Al, the first of the Poll Merinos offered during the sale.
Matched but not beaten was another Poll Merino sired by popular Big Al, Brundanella 18-012.
Return buyer John Taylor, Monteagle purchased two of the three top price rams with 18-014 and 18-012.
Mr Taylor said both rams were nice broad rams that stood extremely well with quality wool.
"We have been purchasing Brundanella genetics for over 15 years for their quality top end rams, good wool cutting and sires that keep performing well in our flock," he said.
Mr Taylor also put together a further five rams to fulfil his requirements for an overall sale average of $3000.
On the third occasion top price was reached Brundanella 18-045, and was purchased by Iandra Pastoral Estate, Greenthorpe.
Volume buyer Geoffrey and Sam Beath, Bryton Wool, Canowindra, purchased 14 rams to a top of $2,250 to average $1321.
Mr Beath said they had been returning to Brundanella for four years for growth rate, wool cut, heavy cutters and good bold crimp.
"We run roughly 1500 self replacing ewes with a 19 micron average," he said.
The lamb growth rate is phenomenal, we hooked wethers at 10 months and they weighed in at 22 kilograms dressed.
- Geoffrey Beath
"From a shearer's prospective, they are good combing sheep that are straight with good bone structure."
The sale was settled by Landmark with Rick Power tallying the bids.
