The 2456 head of cattle offered at Thursday's Wodonga store sale sold to an overall cheaper trend but there was high demand for both cows and calves and heavy feeder steers.
Elders Wodonga livestock agent, Matt Tinkler said most lines of cattle were bred locally, with little commissioned from the north.
He said there was a limited supply of cows and calves compared to previous sales which drove up prices.
Account of Cuddell Pty Ltd, Narrandera sold 19 Wagyu cows and calves at $1500 a head.
G Hewitt offered 11 Angus cows and calves which sold to $1390.
Steers weighing over 350 kilograms sold from around $1000 a head to $1490, while weaners in that weight category sold to $930 and yearlings to $1370.
The top price of $1490 was for a line of 23 Angus steers, weighing 460kg, offered by local vendors, Three Creeks, Culcairn.
Mr Tinkler said there was also a very good run for Shorthorns offered by Major Ridge, Inglebar, Mulwala, which weighed 460kg and made $1440.
KA and JC Cardwell, Gundowring sold 19 Hereford yearling steers weighing 449 for $1370.
P & G Lavis from Bungowannah sold 15 Angus Steers weighing 367kg for $1105.
Mr Tinkler said as the weight dropped off, prices were cheaper.
"Your 350kg Angus steers were still making 320c/kg but once you came back to 260-300kg you were back in the 290c/kg to 305c/kg bracket," Mr Tinkler said.
Steers under 350kg sold from around $250 for weaners weighing 150kg to $840 for steers closer to 300kg.
Mr Tinkler said trend for heifers cheapened this week.
"The heifers as a general rule have been 245c/kg to 255-260c/kg at the better end," Mr Tinkler said.
Per head heifers weighing more than 350kg sold from $805 to $930, while those at the lighter end sold from $170 for heifers under the 150kg mark to $755 for cattle closer to 300kg.
Strathvean, Tarcutta offered 36 Angus Heifers weighing 343kg and made $900 a head.
K & P McPherson of Rosewhite, Victoria offered 17 Angus cross heifers weighing 347kg and made $865.
Mr Tinkler said buying support came in the way of commission purchasers.
"There was certainly cattle that went to South Australia, Tasmanian, Western Victoria but there wasn't too much northern competition," Mr Tinkler said.
Elders Launceston purchased 94 heifers averaging 300kg for $780 average.
The sale was conducted by Paull Scollard Landmark and Elders Wodonga.
