More than 70 years later the committee from Gladstone Campdraft is still donating to charity.
Some of Australia's best known riders were among the 200 competitors from Newcastle to Inverell that were put to the test in the dusty conditions.
Many riders donned pink shirts in support for the Country Women's Association Gladstone's Evening Branch 'pink up the town' fundraiser for breast cancer.
