A strong commitment to visual quality backed by Lambplan figures saw 79 Poll Dorset rams sold from 80 offered for $1386 average at the 21st annual ram sale on behalf Kim, Jenny and James Weir, Pinewalla, Crookwell.
They were well supported in their aim to continue to provide superior sires for local prime lamb producers who have first-cross ewes as their breeding base.
Top price for the Poll Dorsets was $3000 paid by Lindsay Picker, Pleasant View, Binda, who selected the 135kg son of Aberdeen 369-16 for his great scale.
"His outstanding size is backed by impressive Lambplan figures such as a great weaning weight (10.8) and Terminal Carcase Production of 142.1," he said.
"For his size, he is very well balanced with a good length and depth of body."
Mr Picker has been purchasing Poll Dorset rams from Pinewalla for the past 40 years to join to first-cross ewes.
"We aim to sell the majority of our suckers as prime lambs direct to Coles and straight off their mothers," he said.
"Using Pinewalla genetics has enabled us to get early maturing lambs to meet our production ambition."
Volume buyers of Poll Dorsets included Carrawongy Pastoral Co, Roslyn who paid $1833 average for six rams while Peaty Pastoral Pty Ltd also selected six rams but for $1333.33 average price and Chatsworth Pastoral, Binda bought four rams for $1800 average.
In their offering of White Suffolk rams, nine sold from 18 offered for $700 average price with M.T and E.S Gay, Crookwell picking up four rams at that price..
Studmaster Kim Weir was very happy with the sale result, and expressed his appreciation for his clients in their understanding of his use of LambPlan in breeding better rams.
"Our adoption of LambPlan is becoming more accepted by our buyers as they see the benefits in the paddock," he said.
"Particularly with low birthweight figures but with good growth which means they are able to turn off lambs much quicker and without lambing issues."
The sale was settled by Elders, Crookwell with auctioneers Steve Ridley and Tom McGregor sharing the rostrum duties.
