There was a large yarding of 2547 mixed-quality cattle at the Wodonga store sale this week, numbers up by around 500 head on the last sale a fortnight ago with prices mostly remaining firm.
A large run of around 400 cows and calves sold from around $1000/unit to $1500/unit.
A and J Cavallin, Regent Park, Edi, Victoria's pen of five Angus cows and calves sold for $1500/unit to John Atkins of Atkins Marketing Livestock, Howlong as part of their herd dispersal.
A second pen of four units sold to Rodwells Wangaratta for $1420.
PN and M May, Myamley, Tottenham offered a large run of Angus cows and calves with Moonjella Blood, the top pens making $1470/unit.
The tops of the heifers and calves were a pen of eight by eight Charolais cross offered by GRT Partnership, Mullengandra, selling for $1610.
GRT Partnership had 110 heifers and calves in the draft, along with 40 pregnancy in calve heifers and a few pens of steers.
Their pen of 14 PTIC Angus tipped the scales at 497 kilograms and sold for $1060.
Michael Unthank of Brian Unthank said better quality steers made from 300 cents per kilogram to 320-330c/kg, cheaper than a fortnight ago but still solid prices, while lighter steers held their value selling up to 300c/kg.
Steers weighing more than 450kg sold from $1090 to $1500, the dearest pen was 34 Angus steers weighing an average of 500kg offered by LT and CE Briggs, Cudgewa, Vic.
Steers weighing less than 450kg sold from around $450 for Angus steers weighing 130kg to $1395 for Hereford steers weighing 439kg, offered by Springfield Pastoral Company, Culcairn.
Phil Whiteley of Whiteley Ag and Fertiliser, Tooma offered 240 steers and 80 heifers in the draft this week.
The first pen of 21 Angus steers, 12-14 months of age, EU accredited and weighing 328kg sold for $1015/hd, while a large pen of 63 Angus steers, weighing around 317kg and previously purchased at the saleyards, sold for $1000/hd.
Mr Unthank said heifers remained firm and there was a lot of feedlot enquiry. The best feed-weight heifers, weighing from 250-290kg, sold for 270-280c/kg.
PJ and JD McKenna, Holbrook sold six Shorthorn cross heifers weighing an average of 442kg for $1080/hd. Their second pen of six, weighing 389kg going for $950/hd.
PC and AB Taylor, Bobingah, Nimmitabel offered 15 Angus Cross heifers, weighing 352kg, which sold for $1005.
Mr Unthank said the usual, mostly local buyers were active.
"It was a typical mixed yarding for a late-November sale," Mr Unthank said.
The sale was conducted by Wodonga-based agents Corcoran Parker, Brian Unthank, Rodwells Peter Ruaro and Schubert Boers.
