FOR the Wodonga Premier Hereford, Euro and other breeds feature sale at the Northern Victoria Livestock Exchange at Wodonga, agents yarded 3081 head which was met with firm demand.
Paull and Scollard Landmark agent Mark Breen quoted the market as "really good for the fresh calves which sold exceptionally well".
"It was a good yarding considering the season," Mr Breen said.
"With the amount of rain we didn't get, the weight in these calves is exceptional.
"It is hard to imagine people turned up today with all that is happening in the district."
A feature of the sale was the presentation by the Hereford Society for best presented pen which went to Bernard McNamara, Nariel Valley, for their offering of 28 Yavenvale-blood steers weighing 442 kilograms.
They sold for $1310 a head.
The best presented pen of Charolais, sponsored by the Charolais Society of Victoria, was made to Derek Kohlhagen, Walla Walla, for his offering of nine Rangan-blood steers weighing 417kg.
They sold for $1250.
Speaking after the sale, Paull and Scollard Landmark agent Luke Deimel said the sale was strong on the better lines.
"We noticed today anything weighing 320kg and above sold very well in line with last week," he said.
"There was strong competition from the feedlots for that article.
"I don't think we saw a dramatic drop in values for those cattle in the 300-350kg range.
"Those calves still sold to strong competition."
Mr Deimel reported interest from local restockers and an export order had a big influence on the sale.
"Somehow local restockers have been able to find some space in these conditions," he said.
The sale was conducted by Elders and Paull and Scollard Landmark.
