Thousands of people in the Moree Plains Shire remain without power on Friday morning, following a wild storm on Thursday afternoon.
Essential Energy crews have been working throughout the night to restore power, after most of Moree was left in the dark on Thursday evening.
The storm tore through town at about 5pm, with gale force winds ripping trees out of the ground and blowing powerlines down.
While many people remained without power overnight, Essential Energy crews were able to reduce the number of homes and businesses affected by storms in the North West to around 3000.
A total of 957 of these homes and businesses were in Mungindi, while the remaining people without power are in the wider Moree area, according to Essential Energy.
"Additional crews and equipment from Inverell, Walgett and Warialda will be assisting Moree crews today," an Essential Energy spokesperson said.
"A helicopter was also due to arrive at the Moree airport at 7am this morning to assist with power restoration efforts.
"Essential Energy thanks customers for their patience as crews work as quickly as safety allows to make repairs and restore power for customers."
Many people in town recorded close to or above 80mm in an hour during the storm, adding to the 50mm the town received on the weekend.
